Some of the most beautiful places in Corsica are only reachable by sea. A boat trip isn't just an outing -- it's often the highlight of the holiday.

Day trips to the top destinations

Scandola Nature Reserve

The UNESCO-protected Scandola reserve, on the peninsula between Girolata and Calvi, can only be visited by boat. You sail along dramatic red rock cliffs, through sea caves and past the famous natural pool "La Piscine". Most excursions depart from Porto, Cargese or Ajaccio and last half a day to a full day. Expect to pay 50 to 80 euros per person.

Lavezzi Islands

South of Bonifacio lies this archipelago of weathered granite blocks in impossibly clear water. Boats leave regularly from the harbour of Bonifacio for a day trip with swimming stops and time to explore the island. From around 35 euros.

Cliffs of Bonifacio

Short boat trips from Bonifacio's harbour take you along the impressive limestone cliffs and into the sea caves beneath them. You see the city from the waterline, which gives a completely different perspective. Duration: 1 hour, from 25 euros.

Calanques de Piana

The pink granite rocks of the Calanques, south of Porto, are spectacular from the sea. Boat trips from Porto often combine the Calanques with a visit to Scandola and the hamlet of Girolata, which is only reachable by boat or on foot.

Snorkelling trips by boat

From Sagone and Cargese, speedboats head to secluded bays along the west coast where you can swim and snorkel. The boats are equipped with a bar, shaded seating and sometimes a waterslide. Water temperatures reach 21 to 29 degrees in summer. Duration: approximately 3 hours.

Multi-day catamaran cruise

For those with more time, a multi-day cruise along the Corsican coast is a special experience. Belgian skipper Pieter and hostess Julie sail their Lagoon catamaran Orceo along the west coast and the south of the island.

The 8-day cruise departs from Ajaccio and passes the bays of Cupabia and Roccapina, the harbour of Bonifacio, Sant'Amanza on the east coast and Tizzano. Along the way you anchor in sheltered bays, swim in clear water and visit picturesque coastal towns. All meals, drinks and overnight stays on board are included. From 1,400 euros per person for 8 days.

Shorter 3-day cruises are also available, such as an Easter weekend along the Sanguinaires islands, Cargese and Scandola. From 900 euros per person.

Practical information

Boat trips are available throughout the season, but the widest choice runs from May to October. An overview of operators can be found on the official Corsica tourism page. Popular destinations like Scandola and Lavezzi sell out quickly in July and August. Book at least a few days in advance, or reserve before you leave home. Most boats depart from Porto, Ajaccio, Cargese, Propriano or Bonifacio. Ask about the type of boat and maximum number of passengers if you want to avoid crowds.

Insider tip On the crossing between Propriano and Ajaccio, dolphins and sometimes even whales are regularly spotted. Keep your camera at the ready.
