Canyoning in Corsica is only permitted with a certified guide. The prefecture actively enforces this, so always book in advance.
Why Corsica is ideal for canyoning
The mountains of Corsica are cut by deep granite gorges where clear water flows through natural slides, pools and waterfalls. The combination of steep terrain and a warm climate makes the island one of the best canyoning destinations in Europe. Most gorges are in the Bavella massif in the southeast, a short drive from Solenzara, Zonza and Porto-Vecchio.
The best-known canyons
Purcaraccia
The most famous canyon in Corsica, located in the heart of the Aiguilles de Bavella. You descend along natural slides of 2 to 15 metres and abseil down rock walls of nearly 50 metres. The water is clear and emerald green. Allow half a day, of which the descent itself takes about 3.5 hours. The canyon is fairly sporty and works well as a challenging introduction. From around 80 euros per person.
Polischellu
A versatile canyon that combines every facet of the sport: jumps, slides and swimming in clear pools. Technically the obstacles aren't difficult and can be bypassed if you prefer, making Polischellu a good option for beginners and families too. The gorge is also in the Bavella massif, just above Solenzara. From around 55 euros.
Vacca
For those who have canyoned before. The Vacca gorge is where the Solenzara river springs forth, surrounded by enormous rock walls in a cathedral-like setting. The route includes a 16-metre abseil and several jumps. Good physical fitness is required. From around 65 euros.
Canyoning with children
The Fiumicelli canyon, also in the Bavella area, is specially suited for families with children aged 5 and up. There are no technical passages and all obstacles can be bypassed. Jumps are a maximum of 2 to 3 metres. The descent takes about 2.5 hours and costs from 45 euros per person.
Practical information
For several years now, canyoning in the most popular gorges around Quenza and Bavella has been permitted only with a certified guide. The gendarmerie carries out regular checks. That means: book your spot well in advance, especially in July and August. Most operators are based in Solenzara or Zonza. Neoprene suit, helmet and harness are provided. Bring sturdy shoes that can get wet, or hire canyoning shoes on site.
Insider tip Combine a morning of canyoning with an afternoon on the beach at Solenzara. After a few hours in cold mountain water, the warm Mediterranean feels twice as good.
