The water around Corsica is exceptionally clear, with visibility up to 30 metres. That makes the island a top destination for snorkellers and divers alike.
What you can see underwater
The Mediterranean around Corsica harbours a surprisingly rich underwater world. During a snorkelling or diving excursion you can expect to see sea bream, saddled bream, ornate wrasse, grouper, octopus and rays. In the Gulf of Ajaccio and at the Bouches de Bonifacio, dolphins regularly swim alongside boats. The seabed varies from sandy plains and seagrass meadows to rock walls and drop-offs.
Best places to snorkel
Capo Rosso and Cargese
From the harbour of Cargese you take a semi-rigid boat to the cliffs of Capo Rosso. Here you snorkel above a spectacular drop-off in turquoise water. Excursions last 2 to 3 hours and cost from 30 euros.
Gulf of Ajaccio
Around the Isolella peninsula and the rocks of Sette Nave are some of the best snorkelling spots on the west coast. Guided trips depart from the beach at Trottel or by boat. Duration: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
Campomoro and the Gulf of Valinco
South of Propriano, Campomoro offers warm, clear water with plenty of biodiversity. You can also hire an underwater scooter (seabob) here for an extra dimension. Excursions from around 20 euros.
Calvi and L'Ile-Rousse
In the Balagne you can book guided snorkelling trips of 1 to 1.5 hours from both harbours. The coast offers sheltered bays with calm water, suitable for beginners.
Cap Corse
From the marina at Sisco, 15 km north of Bastia, you head to secluded snorkelling spots you wouldn't find on your own. Excursions last nearly 2 hours.
Diving
Corsica has dozens of dive schools spread across the island. Popular diving areas include the Scandola nature reserve (UNESCO-protected), the Lavezzi Islands near Bonifacio and the wrecks off the coast of Ajaccio. An introductory dive costs on average 60 to 80 euros, a dive for certified divers around 50 euros.
Practical information
Snorkelling excursions are usually suitable for all ages and require only basic swimming skills. Equipment (mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit) is nearly always provided. Book at least a few days ahead in high season, as popular excursions fill up fast. Water temperature ranges from 18 degrees in May to 26 degrees in August.
Insider tip The best snorkelling conditions are found early in the morning, when the water is still calm and the light falls at an angle onto the seabed.
