From the water you see Corsica at its most beautiful: cliffs plunging steeply into the sea, hidden beaches and caves with no road leading to them. Sea kayaking is the best way to reach those places.
Why sea kayaking in Corsica
Corsica's coastline stretches over 1,000 kilometres and is largely unspoiled. Many of the finest bays and caves are only reachable by sea. In a kayak you glide silently along rocky coasts, paddle into caves and stop wherever you like to swim or snorkel. Experience isn't needed for most guided trips: you'll get a short briefing beforehand.
Best routes
Cliffs of Bonifacio
Depart from the beach at Piantarella and paddle along the imposing limestone cliffs of Bonifacio, up to 70 metres high. You enter caves and stop at the beach of Grand Sperone. A guided outing takes 2.5 hours and costs from 35 euros.
Lavezzi Islands
From Piantarella you can also make the crossing to the Lavezzi Islands, a protected nature reserve with granite rock formations and crystal-clear water. This is a sportier trip of 4 to 5 hours with about 2.5 hours of paddling and several swimming stops. Some kayaking experience is an advantage.
Capo Pertusato
The southernmost point of Corsica. From Piantarella you paddle along the cliffs of Bonifacio to this 100-metre-high limestone formation. Along the way you pass the Lovers' Cave and the beach of Saint-Antoine. Duration: 4 to 4.5 hours.
Gulf of Ajaccio and Isolella
Around the Isolella peninsula and the islet of Piana you'll find wonderful coastal trips of 2.5 hours. You depart from Pietrosella or the beach of Mare e Sole, a short distance from Ajaccio and Porticcio. The sheltered water of the gulf makes these routes suitable for beginners.
Campomoro
From the bay of Campomoro, 15 minutes from Propriano, you paddle along the granite coast and the Genoese tower. Halfway there's a swimming stop in a sheltered cove. Afterwards you taste local specialities by the tower. Half day, from 40 euros.
Pinarello near Porto-Vecchio
The shallow, transparent bay of Pinarello is ideal for families. The kayaking is gentle and children can watch the underwater life along the way. Half a day with a guide.
Multi-day expedition
For true adventurers there's a two-day kayak expedition from the Gulf of Ajaccio. You paddle by day (approximately 3 hours), camp on a secluded beach and enjoy a sunset you won't soon forget. Departure from the beach at Verghia, including camping equipment.
Practical information
Most operators provide double kayaks and supply a life jacket and dry bag. Bring sunscreen, water and shoes that can get wet. Book a few days ahead in high season. Prices start around 35 euros per person for a half day.
