Waterfalls on Corsica

Corsica is brimming with waterfalls. Thanks to the combination of high mountains, abundant rainfall and granite bedrock, virtually every valley has a cascade of its own. Some are easy to reach, others require a serious hike. Almost all of them have natural swimming pools at their base, making a visit all the more enticing.

Cascades de Purcaraccia

The Purcaraccia waterfalls near Bavella are arguably the most spectacular on the island. Over thousands of years, the river has carved out a natural water park of tall cascades (the highest is 40 metres), natural slides and emerald-green pools. The hike takes an hour and a half to two hours along a narrow, sometimes steep trail. The water is cold (around 14°C on average), but the setting is unforgettable.

Please note: the Purcaraccia waterfalls are only accessible with a certified guide. Unguided visits are not permitted. Drive from Solenzara towards the Col de Bavella and park at the Bocca di Larone.

Insider tip Set aside a full day for this trip. The drive through the mountains to Bavella is an adventure in itself, and at the waterfalls you'll want to take your time.

Cascade de Radule

In the heart of the Niolu region lie the Radule waterfalls. The hike is suitable for families and takes about an hour and a half return. Along the way you pass several natural pools where you can swim. The trail starts at the Col de Vergio and is well marked.

Cascade des Anglais

Near the forest of Vizzavona lie the Cascade des Anglais, named after the English tourists who came here to picnic in the 19th century. The walk from Vizzavona station takes about 45 minutes along a pleasant forest path. At the waterfalls you'll find smooth granite slides and crystal-clear water. One of the most accessible and family-friendly waterfalls on Corsica.

Cascade de Piscia di Gallo

This 60-metre waterfall is located near the Lac de l'Ospedale, north of Porto-Vecchio. The walk takes about 30 minutes. The name literally translates to "the rooster's pee", referring to the shape the water takes as it falls. It's an especially impressive sight after rainfall.

Cascade du Voile de la Mariee

At 70 metres, this is the tallest waterfall on Corsica. The "Bridal Veil" is located near Bocognano, along the road between Ajaccio and Corte. You can spot the waterfall from the road, but a short walk brings you closer to its base.

Cascade de Polischellu

Near Quenza in the Alta Rocca region lie the Polischellu waterfalls. Popular in summer for canyoning and swimming, though the trail is not always straightforward. The reward: deep, crystal-blue pools surrounded by towering rock walls.

Practical tips

  • Footwear: always wear sturdy hiking shoes. The paths to waterfalls are often rocky and slippery.
  • Water levels: after heavy rainfall, waterfalls can be dangerous due to rising water. Do not go in unstable weather.
  • Season: most waterfalls are at their most impressive in spring, when the mountain snow melts.
  • Bring along: swimwear, water, some food and water shoes for the swimming pools.
