Calvi is an accessible coastal town in the northwest of Corsica where beach, citadel and marina together set the scene. It may not be the most spectacular spot on the island, but it's a fine base with a good mix of culture, sea and comfort.
Calvi: a harbour town with character
Calvi sits in the Balagne region and combines traditional Corsican elements with the convenience of a modern seaside resort. If you arrive by ferry, you'll immediately spot the scenery: the citadel perched high above the harbour, rugged mountains in the background and the pine forest of the Pinede lining the beach. Even without the ferry you get that same picture, for example during a boat trip from the marina.
Social life revolves mainly around the Port de Plaisance and the Quai Landry, the promenade connecting harbour and beach. Here you'll find restaurants, cafes and small shops. Historic monuments aren't the main draw; it's above all a place to stroll and people-watch.
Calvi's beach is nearly six kilometres long and consists of fine sand with shallow water. It's practical, easily accessible and well equipped with facilities. If you're after something quieter, Plage de l'Alga near Pointe de la Revellata or the beaches at Lumio are good alternatives.
Insider tip Drive a little further on to Lumio for a beach with more space and a view of Calvi across the bay.
The Genoese citadel forms the historic heart. Within its walls you wander along narrow lanes, churches such as the Cathedrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the former governor's palace. It's even claimed that Christopher Columbus was born here. In June a jazz festival takes place inside the fortress walls.
Calvi isn't everyone's ultimate Corsica destination. Beaches are more exuberant in Porto-Vecchio, cliffs more impressive in Bonifacio and the landscape wilder around Porto and Scandola. Yet it's precisely the combination of beach, town and hinterland that makes Calvi attractive and easy to get around.
Parking has been paid for several years now, including at the beach during high season. After 7 pm it's free again. It comes with the territory; simply factor it into your planning.
