Beautiful hikes on Corsica
Corsica is a paradise for hikers. The island is famous for the legendary GR20, but anyone who thinks that's the only great route is selling Corsica short. From easy coastal walks and forest paths to mountain treks past lakes and gorges, there's a suitable hike for every level and fitness.
Hiking is one of the best ways to truly experience Corsica. On foot you reach places you'd never get to by car or motorbike: quiet mountain meadows, shaded forests, abandoned villages, and viewpoints where the only sounds are the wind and the crickets.
The island has an enormous network of waymarked trails. Some are challenging and high-alpine, others relaxed and perfect for a short morning walk or a family outing.
The GR20: famous and demanding
The GR20 is without a doubt Corsica's most famous hiking route, and arguably one of the toughest long-distance walks in Europe. The route crosses the island from north to south, following the highest mountain ridges.
It's a spectacular trek with steep passages, rocky terrain, and major elevation changes. For experienced mountain hikers it's an unforgettable challenge, but it's certainly not a walk for everyone.
Insider tip Don't underestimate the GR20. Good preparation, fitness, and equipment are essential. Many hikers choose to walk only a section of the route rather than the entire trail.
Far more than just the GR20
If you don't fancy hiking for weeks or aren't looking for an extreme mountain trek, Corsica has an enormous range of alternatives. All across the island there are stunning day hikes that are every bit as impressive.
Think for example of:
- Hikes through mountain gorges with rivers and waterfalls
- Routes to mountain lakes like Lac de Melo and Lac de Capitello
- Forest walks through chestnut groves and pine forests
- Coastal paths with sea views and hidden beaches
- Old donkey trails connecting villages
Many of these hikes are well waymarked and suitable for a wide audience.
Insider tip Start your hike early in the day, especially in summer. It's cooler, quieter, and the light is often more beautiful.
Combining hiking and swimming
What makes hiking on Corsica extra special is that you can often combine a trek with a refreshing dip. In many valleys you'll find natural pools and clear mountain water.
A morning hike followed by a swim in a river or the sea isn't the exception — it's practically the rule.
Insider tip Always bring water shoes. The rocks around mountain pools can be slippery, but the swimming itself is often the highlight of the day.
For every level and every group
Corsica isn't just for fanatical mountain hikers. Families, beginners, and people who simply enjoy walking for a few hours will find plenty of options here.
There are short routes of one to two hours, flat walks along rivers, and paths suitable for older children. You can also join a guided walk in many places, which offers added safety and background information.
Insider tip Ask at a local tourist office or mountain hut about current conditions. Weather and trail conditions can vary significantly by season.
Hiking at a Corsican pace
Hiking on Corsica isn't about racking up kilometres. It's about looking, smelling, listening, and pausing every now and then. A lunch on a rock, a chat with a shepherd, or simply soaking in the view is as much a part of it as the walking itself.
Whether you dream of the GR20 or prefer a gentle walk through a valley, Corsica shows its finest side on foot.
In brief
- The GR20 is impressive, but certainly not the only option
- Corsica offers hikes for every level
- Mountains, forests, gorges, and coastal paths alternate with each other
- Hiking and swimming often go hand in hand
To truly understand Corsica, you need to explore the island on foot.
