The beaches of Corsica
Beaches on Corsica
Summary: Corsica is famous for its dramatic mountains, but its beaches are equally legendary. From wide sandy bays with shallow water to rugged rocky coasts and hidden coves, the island offers an incredible variety of beaches. Whether you're travelling with children, looking to snorkel, or simply seeking a quiet bay, there's always a beach that's perfect for you.
When people think of Corsica, they often picture mountains and wild nature. But the island also has a coastline packed with stunning beaches. Some rival tropical destinations: white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and pine trees providing natural shade.
What makes Corsica special is the variety. Along the east coast you'll find long, wide sandy beaches that slope gently into the sea — ideal for families and long beach walks. In the south lie the famous bays around Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio, with clear water and spectacular rock formations. And along the west coast and in the north, you'll discover wilder beaches, often surrounded by mountains and with a much quieter atmosphere.
A beach for every type of beach lover
On Corsica you'll find:
- Family-friendly sandy beaches with shallow water
- Small, sheltered coves with crystal-clear water
- Wild, unspoilt beaches with no facilities
- Rocky spots that are perfect for snorkelling
- Town beaches close to restaurants and cafes
Many beaches are surprisingly quiet, especially outside peak season. Even at popular spots, you can often find a quieter stretch by walking just a few minutes.
Insider tip Head to the beach early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The light is more beautiful, the temperature more pleasant, and you'll have much more space to yourself.
Sand, rocks, and everything in between
Corsica's most famous beaches are in the south, around Porto-Vecchio. Names like Palombaggia, Santa Giulia, and Rondinara regularly appear on lists of Europe's most beautiful beaches. Here you'll find white sand, calm water, and an almost Caribbean vibe.
But there are gems in other parts of the island too. In the Balagne, near Calvi and Ile-Rousse, long sandy beaches offer views of the mountains. In the north, around Cap Corse and Saint-Florent, you'll find wilder and often quieter beaches. And along the west coast, the rocky bays and cliffs provide a spectacular backdrop.
Insider tip Got a rental car or motorbike? Try turning down a side road towards the sea. Many of the most beautiful little beaches are marked only by a small sign.
Facilities and accessibility
Not every beach on Corsica has the same amenities. At the most popular beaches you'll find:
- Car parks (often paid during peak season)
- Beach restaurants and cafes
- Sun lounger, parasol, or pedalo hire
- Toilets and showers
At more remote beaches there's sometimes nothing at all. That's part of their charm, but it also means you need to bring your own water, food, and shade.
Insider tip Always bring a parasol or beach shelter, especially when travelling with children. Natural shade isn't available everywhere.
Take the time to explore
Many travellers make the mistake of only visiting the most famous beaches. They're beautiful, of course, but Corsica is full of smaller, lesser-known spots that are often quieter and more authentic.
A beach day on Corsica is rarely just about sunbathing. It might also mean a coastal walk, snorkelling among rocks, lunching at a beach shack, or grabbing an ice cream in a seaside village.
Insider tip Combine a beach with a nearby village. A morning at the beach followed by an afternoon on a terrace or ice cream in the old town centre makes for a much more enjoyable day.
